Choosing Between 1.5T and 3T MRI for Your Facility

Choosing the right field strength is one of the first — and most consequential — decisions a facility makes when investing in MRI. Both 1.5T and 3T systems remain in wide clinical use today, and the right choice depends on your case mix, budget, and facility infrastructure.

Signal quality vs. versatility

3T systems roughly double the signal-to-noise ratio of 1.5T, which translates into sharper images, faster acquisition, or both. This makes 3T especially attractive for neuro, cardiac, and orthopedic imaging where fine anatomical detail matters.

1.5T systems, meanwhile, remain the clinical workhorse. They are more forgiving of motion and susceptibility artifacts, have a larger library of validated protocols, and are compatible with a broader range of implants and devices.

Total cost of ownership

3T systems typically carry a higher purchase price, more demanding siting and shielding requirements, and higher helium and power consumption. For high-volume, subspecialized imaging centers, the clinical upside often justifies this. For general diagnostic practices, a 1.5T system frequently offers the better return on investment.

Our recommendation

If your case mix is dominated by routine musculoskeletal, abdominal, and general diagnostic imaging, a 1.5T system like the Meridian MRI 1.5T will serve you well. If neuro, cardiac, or advanced research protocols are core to your practice, the Aurora MRI 3T is worth the additional investment.
